These pumpkins need abundant sunlight and open space to thrive. This disciplined approach often results in pumpkins large enough for competitions like California’s Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival, where some of the biggest pumpkins in the world are celebrated.

These plants are heavy feeders, so start with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in the early stages to support robust vine development. As the fruit begins to set, switch to a fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium to promote healthy fruit growth.

In the US., where “bigger is better” often rings true, the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers Association (OVGPG) embodies this spirit. Since 1995, OVGPG has provided resources, guidance, and a community for enthusiasts aiming to grow record-breaking pumpkins.
Their annual events, like the popular Annual Weigh-Off, draw crowds and showcase some of the biggest pumpkins grown in the Ohio Valley. Funding for these events comes from initiatives like seed sales and auctions, helping sustain OVGPG’s mission.
Recently, Dosatron contributed to this mission by donating a D14MZ2 injector for auction. The winner, Doug Kisamore, shared insights on how Dosatron technology has enhanced his pumpkin-growing process. Doug noted that the injector simplifies feeding, allowing him to apply nutrients consistently and accurately—a vital factor in growing oversized pumpkins.
Doug: The beauty of Dosatron is its flexibility; you can use almost any nutrient mix, even organic. Soil testing plays an important role, too, so I can adjust nutrients precisely.
Doug: My personal best so far is 877.5 pounds.
Doug: In Ohio, we start mid-to-late April. Outside Ohio, it’s usually the first week of May. We use mini-greenhouses or hoop houses at the beginning, pollinate by late June, and get the pumpkin growing. Weigh-offs happen in September through October.
Doug: My family’s used them for decades. We originally had a Dosatron on the farm for our cattle and hogs during 4-H, using it to dose electrolytes in water. My uncle even had one of the oldest operating Dosatrons on his farm before he upgraded!
Doug: I’m aiming to break into the thousands this year! And a world record next!
The current world record for the heaviest pumpkin was set in 2023.
The heaviest pumpkin weighed 2,749 pounds (1,246.9 kilograms) when it was presented by Travis Gienger (USA) at the 50th Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off held in Half Moon Bay, California, USA, on 9 October 2023. The record was confirmed by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth.
In addition to the sheer size, these record pumpkins often display remarkable color and shape, with a vibrant orange hue and a well-defined roundness that makes them visually striking.
